Networking – Components and Importance of Networking- Client | Networking and servers

Definition: Networking can be defined as the interconnection of two or more computing devices together through a connection media for the purpose of sharing resources such as files, documentation, printers, scanners, routers, etc…

IMPORTANCE OF NETWORKING

The major importance of networking is the ability to share resources between many computing devices. It increases the speed of operation and there is an ease of communication.

COMPONENTS OF NETWORKING

The components in computer networking include:

  1. The client
  2. The resources
  3. Media
  4. Network topology
  5. Network interface card
  6. The server
  7. Network devices.

CLIENT

This refers to what workstation runs the client operating system such as window 2007, Window XP etc. it is the system that demands resources.

THE SERVER

This is a powerful computer, dedicated to run the server operating system such as Window server 2005, window server 2008 and Linux server.

USES OF THE SERVER

The server is used to manage the client and all other resources on the network.

RESOURCES

These are anything that can be shared in the network.

Examples are: printer, scanners, routers, etc.

MEDIA

This is the medium through which devices in the network communicate each other.

Types of media

  1. Bounded media, which is the wire or cable.
  2. Unbounded media. This is the wireless media.

THE CABLES

The cable is a network media used to connect one networking device to the other or to connect two computers together to share resources. Different types of cables are used depending on the network topology, protocol, size.

TYPES OF CABLES

  1. Coaxial cable
  2. Optical fiber cable
  3. The crossover cable
  4. Twisted pair cable

The Optical Fibre.

This is a cable that contains one or more optical fiber. It carries light impulses.

The optic fiber cables are expensive but have higher bandwidth transmits data over a longer distance.

The Crossover Cables

Is a type Ethernet cable used to connect computing device together directly where they would normally be in connect via a network switch, hub, or router, such as directly connecting two personal computers via their network adapters.

Twisted pair cables

A twisted pair cable is a type of cable in which two connectors are connected together for the purpose of canceling out electromagnetic interference from external sources. This kind of cable is used homes and the corporate network.

Twisted pair cable consist of two types:

  1. Shielded Twisted Pair(STP) cable: This type of cable combines the technique shielding and cancellation and wire twisting.
  2. The STP usually install with STP data connector which is especially for STP cable. However, STP cabling can use the RJ connector.
  3. Unshielded twisted pair cable: This type of cable is use for a variety of networks.

Network Interface Card (N I C)

What Is a NIC (Network Interface Card)? – Lifewire

Personal computer or workstation on a local area network (LAN) typically contains NIC design specifically for the local area network transmission technology such as Ethernet or token ring.
